In short
- MCP and the CLI sign in to your Higgsfield account and spend plan credits at standard rates; unlimited models and free generations do not apply to them.
- The API is a separate product: a prepaid US dollar balance with a $5 minimum top-up, per-second video prices, and funds that expire after one year.
- Higgsfield's MCP connector requires an active paid subscription and has no built-in credit cap.
- Genjutsu at 720p costs 104 credits for 15 seconds on a plan, or $10.22 through the API at $0.681 a second.
Higgsfield offers three ways to generate outside its website. MCP connects chat agents such as Claude and ChatGPT to your Higgsfield account; the CLI does the same for coding agents such as Claude Code; the API is a separate developer product with its own key. The split that matters is billing: MCP and CLI spend your plan’s credits, while the API charges a prepaid dollar balance per second of video.
Here is what each one is, how to set it up, and how to pick.
The short version
| MCP | CLI and Skills | API | |
|---|---|---|---|
| For | Chat agents: Claude, ChatGPT (plugin), Cursor | Coding agents: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex | Your own code and apps |
| Sign-in | Your Higgsfield account, no key | Your Higgsfield account, no key | API key (ID and secret) |
| Requires | Active paid subscription | Your account and plan credits | API account and prepaid balance |
| Pays with | Plan credits, standard rates | Plan credits, standard rates | US dollars, per second of video |
| Unlimited and free gens | No | No | Not applicable |
| Spending cap | None built in | None built in | Balance can’t go below zero |
| Results | Your Assets on higgsfield.ai | Your Assets on higgsfield.ai | Files kept at least 7 days |
All of this is from Higgsfield’s help center and API docs, read October 20, 2026.
Higgsfield MCP
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard that lets an AI assistant call outside tools. Higgsfield’s MCP server lets an agent generate images, video, characters and audio inside the conversation, using your existing account. Higgsfield’s MCP page advertises 30+ image and video models with “no API key required.”
Connecting it to Claude. In Claude on the web or Claude Desktop, open Settings, Connectors, choose Add custom connector, name it Higgsfield and enter:
https://mcp.higgsfield.ai/mcp
Click Connect and authorize in the Higgsfield window that opens. ChatGPT uses the official Higgsfield plugin from its plugin directory instead, and Cursor lists Higgsfield in its marketplace. Any other MCP-compatible client takes the same URL. Higgsfield notes that audio generation and its website-building skill are not available in ChatGPT.
Credits. An active paid subscription is required, and “every generation through a connected agent deducts credits, regardless of your plan.” Unlimited models and free generations apply only on higgsfield.ai. There is also no native credit cap: Higgsfield says limits can only be set through prompt instructions, which are not enforced. Using MCP falls under Higgsfield’s Developer Terms, and you are responsible for what an agent generates through your account.
Higgsfield CLI and Skills
For coding agents, Higgsfield ships a command-line tool plus “Skills,” packaged instructions that tell the agent how to call it. Higgsfield describes the CLI as the way it integrates with coding agents, and MCP as the fit for chat agents. Claude Code, OpenClaw and Hermes use it, and the agent can install it itself:
npm i -g @higgsfield/cli
higgsfield auth login
npx skills add higgsfield-ai/skills
The login finishes in your browser; no API key is involved. The Skills command installs three skills (generate, soul and product-photoshoot), and re-running it updates them. Billing is the same as MCP: the same account, the same plan credits, the same rates, no unlimited or free generations. Outputs appear in your Assets on higgsfield.ai. Higgsfield does not publish which operating systems the CLI supports.
Higgsfield API
The API is for developers who build generation into their own products. One key opens every model in the API catalog (Higgsfield says 50+ video and image models).
Getting a key:
- Sign up for an API account at open.higgsfield.ai, as an individual or a company.
- Add a payment method and fund your balance. The minimum top-up is $5.
- Create a key. It has an ID and a secret, and the full key is shown once. Creating a key unlocks 20 concurrent requests.
Calls go to the REST API at api.higgsfield.ai or through the Python and TypeScript SDKs. Generation is asynchronous: you get a request ID and either poll for status or receive a webhook.
Billing. Higgsfield calls the subscription and the API “two separate products with separate billing.” Video is priced per second of output, images per image. Only successful generations are charged; failed requests are refunded automatically. The balance can’t go below zero, auto top-up is available, and funds expire one year after they are added. Output files are kept for at least seven days, so you download them to your own storage.
What the same clip costs each way
MCP and the CLI cost exactly what the website costs in credits. The API is priced differently, and the gap depends on the model.
| Clip | Plan credits (MCP, CLI, web) | API list price |
|---|---|---|
| Genjutsu, 15 s, 480p | 40 credits | $4.77 |
| Genjutsu, 15 s, 720p | 104 credits | $10.22 |
| Genjutsu, 15 s, 1080p | 144 credits | $24.48 |
| Kling 3.0 Motion Control, 5 s, 720p | ~7 credits | $0.63 |
Credit figures are from Higgsfield’s pricing page and Genjutsu guide; API prices are from Jutsu Studio’s Higgsfield price table (list rates before discounts, checked October 15, 2026). Higgsfield’s Genjutsu guide values 40 credits at about $2.00, and on Plus billed annually ($47 for 1,200 credits) a credit works out to roughly $0.04. What a credit costs you depends on your plan and whether you use them all; Higgsfield credits explained has the plan table.
So for Genjutsu, plan credits are cheaper per clip by a wide margin, as long as you spend them before they reset each cycle. The API wins on flexibility: no subscription, no monthly expiry, a balance that lasts a year, and models that some plans don’t include.
Which one to pick
- You already pay for a plan and want to generate from Claude or ChatGPT: MCP. Set your own limits, because the connector has none.
- You work in Claude Code, Cursor or Codex: the CLI and Skills. Same credits as MCP.
- You are building an app, a script or a pipeline, or you generate in bursts: the API. Pay per second, keep the balance for a year.
- You want unlimited models or free generations: the website. They don’t apply to MCP, CLI or the API.
- You want an agent to spend for you: decide where the limit lives first. Higgsfield’s MCP and CLI rely on prompt instructions; the API’s hard limit is the balance you load.
Using them from a Mac
Jutsu Studio, a free and unofficial Mac app, takes the same choice as a setting: connect your Higgsfield account to spend plan credits with Higgsfield’s exact quote on every job, or connect an API key to pay as you go at the published list prices. A few models are available only one way (Kling 2.6 Motion Control and Wan 2.7 with an API key, MiniMax H3 Max and the finishing tools with an account). Either way it shows the price on the Generate button, can enforce a daily spending cap, and saves every result to your disk.
If you want an agent to run character swaps for you, Swapjutsu ships its own MCP server for Claude Code and other MCP clients. It is off until you allow agents in Settings, and agents spend only within a daily budget you set, cannot delete anything and never see your key.
