Higgsfield Open-Source Alternatives on GitHub, Checked

The GitHub projects sold as open-source Higgsfield alternatives: license, stars, last update, whose API key each needs and whether anything runs locally.

In short

  • Open-Generative-AI (formerly Open-Higgsfield-AI) is the biggest project, at about 31,000 GitHub stars, MIT-licensed, and needs a Muapi.ai key for its cloud models.
  • Of the ten projects checked on October 20, 2026, none generates video on a Mac without a cloud key or a separate GPU machine.
  • Two of the three most-starred projects, open-higgsfield and HeliosGen, have no license file on GitHub.
  • Most "open-higgsfield-ai" repos are copies of Open-Generative-AI with 0 or 1 stars and no license.

Search GitHub for a Higgsfield alternative and you get a dozen “open-source Higgsfield” studios. Nearly all of them are free interfaces to someone else’s paid API: the app is open source, the generations are billed by Muapi.ai, kie.ai, BeatAPI, OpenRouter or Higgsfield itself. None of the projects we checked runs a video model on a Mac by itself.

Below is what each one is, with the license, stars and last update as GitHub showed them on October 20, 2026. Two of the projects are this site’s own apps, Jutsu Studio and Swapjutsu, and they are marked as such.

The table

jutsuhq/swapjutsu-seedance-character-swap (ours) MIT 1 Oct 19, 2026 Native Mac app Prep yes; render on your own ComfyUI Comfy key, or none with your own ComfyUI

Stars are a popularity signal, not a quality one, and they change daily. “None on GitHub” means the repository has no license file, so by default its code isn’t licensed for reuse even though it is public.

Open-Generative-AI, the big one

This is the project most lists mean. It used to be called Open-Higgsfield-AI, and the old Anil-matcha/Open-Higgsfield-AI address now redirects to it. The README describes a studio with 600+ models in 14 studios (image, video, lip sync, cinema and more), MIT-licensed, with desktop installers for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows and Linux. The latest release, 2.0.0, came out on May 23, 2026.

What to know before you install:

  • It is powered by Muapi.ai. Cloud generations need a Muapi access key, and the same company sells a hosted version and a white-label plan from $49 a month. That is the business behind the free app.
  • Local inference is limited on a Mac. The desktop app bundles stable-diffusion.cpp for image models such as SDXL and Z-Image, using Metal on Apple Silicon. Video models run only through Wan2GP, which you install yourself on a machine with an NVIDIA or AMD GPU.
  • The Mac build isn’t notarized, so macOS blocks it on first launch until you allow it.

open-higgsfield and HeliosGen

wide-trace/open-higgsfield is a Next.js studio with 38 models, 8 image and 30 video, and a hosted demo. You paste a “platform key” in id:secret form. Its model catalog uses IDs like higgsfield-ai/dop/lite, and its settings point at an HF_API_BASE_URL; Higgsfield’s own SDK uses the same key:secret format. Our reading of the code is that it calls Higgsfield’s API, so you pay Higgsfield’s rates. GitHub shows no license file.

SegFault42/HeliosGen is a node-based workflow builder in a Tauri desktop app, with a macOS Apple Silicon build (1.2.1, September 9, 2026) that is unsigned. Its “100% local” claim is about your data: projects, history and media stay in a local database and folder. Generation goes through your kie.ai key. GitHub shows no license file here either.

The “open-higgsfield-ai” copies

Searching GitHub for open-higgsfield-ai returned 52 repositories on October 20. Apart from the projects in the table, most are copies of Open-Generative-AI under its old name, with 0 or 1 stars, no license file and names like git-clone-https-github.com-Anil-matcha-Open-Higgsfield-AI. They add nothing to the original, and some go months without an update. If you want this code, take it from the source repo.

The smaller projects

  • BeatDesign (Apache-2.0) is the most “local” of the group: a canvas and a timeline editor where importing, trimming, captions and MP4 export run in your browser with no key. Generating media needs a BeatAPI key. It runs from source with Node.js 22 and pnpm; desktop packaging isn’t done yet.
  • TechBeme/open-higgsfield (MIT) is a self-hostable Next.js app over Freepik, Google and Vercel AI Gateway keys, with 40 curated models.
  • OpenStudio (MIT) is images only, through OpenRouter, with the cost of every run recorded.
  • OpenCanvas (MIT) is a node editor with Mac builds (1.0.9, March 2026); its README doesn’t say which AI providers it connects to.
  • ClabstreamTeam/Open-Higgsfield-AI describes itself as an internal team tool.

This site’s two apps

We make two of the projects in the table, so weigh this section accordingly.

Jutsu Studio is not an alternative to Higgsfield. It is an unofficial, MIT-licensed native Mac app for Higgsfield: you connect your Higgsfield account or API key, and it adds a queue, a local library and the price on every button. Generation happens on Higgsfield and is billed by Higgsfield. Pick it if you already use Higgsfield and want a desktop app; see the Higgsfield desktop app guide.

Swapjutsu replaces one Higgsfield feature, character swap. Everything up to the render runs on the Mac for free: cuts, a mask per person, tracking, pose, depth and the prompt. The render goes to Seedance 2.5 through Comfy’s API with your Comfy credits, or to Wan 2.2 Animate on your own ComfyUI at no cost. Its README lists a 7-second 480p draft at $1.19. It needs an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later.

If you want something that runs locally

If “open source” means “no API bill” to you, the projects above won’t get you there. For video generation on your own hardware:

  • LTX Desktop (Lightricks, Apache-2.0) generates locally on Apple Silicon with 48 GB or more of memory on macOS 26, or at 540p and 5 seconds with 32 GB, according to its README.
  • ComfyUI runs open models such as Wan 2.2 and LTX; Swapjutsu can send its renders to your own ComfyUI.

More on both in the best AI video apps for Mac and running ComfyUI on a Mac.

Which to pick

  • The most models in one free interface: Open-Generative-AI, if a Muapi key is acceptable.
  • A local editor with AI generation added: BeatDesign.
  • You use Higgsfield and want it on your Mac: Jutsu Studio (ours).
  • Character swap without Higgsfield’s rate: Swapjutsu (ours).
  • No API at all: LTX Desktop or ComfyUI on capable hardware.

Check the license before you build on any of these. A repository without one is visible, but not open source in the legal sense.

Run Higgsfield from your Mac.

Jutsu Studio is a free, open-source Mac app for Higgsfield: a queue, a local library and the price on every button.

FAQ.

Is there a free open-source alternative to Higgsfield?

The apps are free and open source, but the generations are not: almost every project on GitHub sends jobs to a paid API such as Muapi.ai, kie.ai, BeatAPI or Higgsfield's own. Truly free video means running an open model like Wan 2.2 or LTX on your own hardware.

What is Open-Higgsfield-AI on GitHub?

It was the earlier name of Anil-matcha/Open-Generative-AI; the old address now redirects there. It is an MIT-licensed studio app powered by Muapi.ai, with desktop builds for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Do these alternatives run Higgsfield's models?

Mostly not. They run the same third-party models (Kling, Seedance, Veo, Flux and others) through other API resellers. Higgsfield's own models, such as Genjutsu, need Higgsfield's API.

Can any of them run video models locally on a Mac?

Not on their own. Open-Generative-AI runs image models locally on Apple silicon and video only through a separate Wan2GP install on an NVIDIA or AMD GPU. For local video on a Mac, look at LTX Desktop or ComfyUI instead.
